    Reporting to the Product Development Manager, the Technical Designer’s primary responsibility is to develop and manage styles from design concept to top of production. They will use tech packs to specify measurements, construction details, size, grading and proto reviews to ensure our standards are met consistently across styles, vendors and areas of business. The Technical Designer will work intimately with design, product development, sourcing and the vendor to ensure the accuracy of each style is being executed.   The Technical Designer will also be responsible for ensuring your styles are tracking towards timely fit approvals.


    • Evaluate all samples for fit, measurements and construction details to ensure all garments meet company standards and ensure products are developed in a manner consistent with manufacturer capabilities and cost specifications.
    • Follow policies, principles, and standards for Technical Design within Alternative, including company fit, grading, measuring, construction, quality and tolerance standards.
    • Responsible for style + WIP tracking from proto requests through TOP including communicating approval status, maintaining tools that allow for easy reporting and communication.
    • Initiate and maintain daily communication with vendors to ensure integrity of design-approved prototypes, including monitoring quality, responding to any technical questions, communicating any required changes.
    • Create technical packages in PLM and Illustrator based upon design concepts by using flat technical CADs, construction detail call-outs, point of measurement specifications and Alternative grade rules and tolerances.  Determine when inspriration garments or patterns should be sent to vendor to help with development.
    • Manage fit sessions including scheduling, model database, model measurements, communication with agencies, weekly fitting recaps, communicating any changes to vendors. Responsible for presenting fits of styles at seasonal design reviews.
    • File/organize all technical packages and samples so that they are easily accessible to all team members.
    • Responsible for maintaining critical spec charts and providing fit information based on internal tools and customer needs.
    • Responsible for weekly alerts to internal teams on WIP tracking, approval status, sample status, in a clear and concise way. Maintaining internal tracking tool to allow for easy access to information.
    • Partner with Product Development and Quality teams to support initiatives, special projects and continuous product improvement.






    • Associate/Bachelor’s degree in Fashion (Apparel/Textile Design, Manufacturing, Prod. Dev.) required.
    • 4+ years of experience in a technical design capacity, with a thorough understanding of the apparel design & development process from inception through production.
    • Experience working with knits in men’s and/or women’s garments with sustainability a plus
    • Knowledge of production pattern making, grading, spec revisions, pattern corrections skills, garment construction, sewing, technical drawing, measuring and fitting. Other relevant knowledge is garment testing, and basics of product costing.
    • Strong understanding of development and production processes including stitch/seam types, cutting, marker making and manufacturing principals.
    • Strong organizational skills and highly self-motivated and able to quickly adapt to unique situations.
