Position requires the expertise to interpret creative design concepts in to the development of new apparel prototypes that can be manufactured in mass production through accurate product specification completion. Technical fit is a primary focus, along with appropriate construction direction to ensure brand integrity and consistency.  Additionally, this position will follow standard processes, guidelines and expectations that are established for the technical design position while making recommendations to improve efficiencies and effectiveness.  Position completes technical specifications to support both the development and production phases of the prototype lifecycle for both the internal supply chain as well as the external supply chain (direct vendor relationships and/or agent relationships).  Position will also give strategic direction to global partners on how to resolve daily obstacles related to the technical design function (field questions and resolve issues related to the successful execution of both green seal (base size fit approval) and red seal (full grade fit approval) related activities.


  • Initiates technical specs for each development request with detailed sketches, material requirements, key measurements, grade rules, and construction details to accurately interpret creative design direction and achieve a Blue Seal prototype sample within the desired cost target.
    • Provides construction and/or materials recommendations to achieve optimal cost.
    • Interpret creative design direction through illustration with a technically correct and accurate sketch to include specific prototype feature details, stitching, placement, etc.
    • Communicate details to achieve the desired prototype sample balancing written verbiage with illustrations and photographs.
    • Provide garment measurements for both base size and graded sizes appropriate to the prototype styling and size/gender category to achieve the desired aesthetic and technical outcome.
    • Provide construction details to achieve the desired aesthetic and technical performance outcome.
  • Creates patterns for each development request as needed and adheres to defined block patterns to support standardized fit to deliver consistency to the brand while supporting speed to market objectives.
    • Supports the fit-by-one strategy and tracks vendor performance.
    • Defines and utilizes block patterns to support standardized fit.
  • Owns the technical fit process and leads fit sessions to evaluate technical adjustments reflecting creative design feedback regarding aesthetic approval; documents technical adjustments to achieve aesthetic, technical fit, construction, performance and quality objectives.
    • Conduct fit evaluation reviews with creative design and/or technical partners as required using live fit models, fit forms, or both.
    • Evaluate and provide feedback to achieve the technical fit appropriate for the product category, size, and gender group.
    • Communicates sample requirements and timing to support Blue/Green/Red seal objectives.
    • Achieve Green Seal (base size fit approval) as well as Red Seal (full grade fit approval).
  • Communicates cross-functionally and internationally to provide development direction and resolve technical product issues during the development phase as well as during the production phase as needed.
  • Supports salesmen sample process by providing accurate patterns and technical specifications.
  • Supports internal manufacturing pre-preproduction process by providing accurate patterns and technical specifications.
  • Creates final full technical spec to reflect all fit, construction and performance details to support manufacturing and quality adherence.
    • Provide bill of materials details and usage requirements (fabrics, trims, accessories, attribution) to achieve the desired outcome for sample development as well as to support manufacturing.
    • Responsible for the following components of the manufacturing specification: sketch, bill of materials and usage, graded measurements, construction details.
  • Adheres to the product design and development calendars of multiple businesses & seasons that run concurrent to each other.

    • Executes the development process and associated requirements for the respective seasonal development calendar to ensure work is completed in a timely manner for on-time calendar execution.
    • Track and communicate expectations on prototype sample timing requirements to meet the deadlines established in the respective PD&D calendar.
  • Collaborates with Hanes Europe and the US domestic R&D teams to support innovative development initiatives.
  • Participates in product improvement initiatives to support improved manufacturing efficiencies and cost reduction.
  • Provide input to improve the technical design process to support optimum efficiency, effectiveness and speed-to-market.

    • Collaborates with other technical design teams as needed to support and improve the standardized technical design guidelines and processes.


Minimum Education and Experience Required:

Minimum Education required: 

  • Minimum education required: BS/BA degree in an apparel and/or textile related field, preferable in fashion design.
  • Minimum experience required: 3-4 years in a technical design role with experience in multiple product categories across multiple size and gender groups.
  • Experience in adult male underwear and female underwear preferred.

Skill Requirements:

  • Demonstrated leadership skills and ability to build cross-functional relationships in an international environment.
  • Demonstrated proficiency of garment construction, technical specifications, flat sketching, and garment measurements.
  • Working knowledge in computerized pattern making, fit/balance, construction, and grading.
  • Knowledge of fabrics, elastics and trims and the impact of their performance on fit in garment form.
  • Ability to lead fit sessions and work with live models and/or fit forms to make adjustments on balance, fit and construction.
  • Ability to communicate in a clear, concise and standardized manner in both written and verbal form to provide clear feedback across multiple language and cultural environments.
  • Ability to evaluate and select fit models based on body type as defined by brand.
  • Knowledge of industrial sewing techniques including stitch and seam types.
  • Strong initiative and attention to detail along with strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects at one time while maintaining adherence to the seasonal development calendar.
  • Ability to establish priorities and determine action plan to manage workload.
  • Proficiency in product development and specification software. Experience with FlexPLM is preferred.
  • Proficiency in pattern-making software. Experience with Lectra preferred.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, Outlook, PowerPoint), Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop.
  • Ability to travel internationally, as well as within the US (30% time).
